About the Family Birthing Center
Good Samaritan Hospital Family Birthing Center excels at providing family-focused care for women and babies in the Dayton area. Physicians, nurses, and certified nurse midwives collaborate based on their combined experience, education, and core interests to help their patients.
GSH Family Birthing Center provides a broad range of services to empower women to make their own birth choices, including:
- Experienced, highly trained, and responsive physicians, nurses and certified nurse midwives
- Labor, childbirth, and baby care classes
- Large, welcoming labor and delivery rooms, some with whirlpool tubs
- Pain management options
- Pregnancy and labor support from midwives; we can also refer to a doula (a specially trained assistant who supports a mother during labor)
GSH Family Birthing Center also helps expectant mothers recover from pregnancy-induced illnesses, such as hyperemesis (severe morning sickness).
GSH Family Birthing Center provides primary nursing for patients. As a family-focused area, patients may have a reasonable number of visitors, except for during labor and delivery, when there is a limit of four visitors. One family member is also welcome to spend the night on the convertible bed in each patient’s room.
GSH Family Birthing Center is located on the 7th floor of the south building. Expectant mothers ready to be admitted for labor can come in through the emergency room, come in the main entrance or take the elevator to 7th floor and go straight to the GSH Family Birthing Center. There is no need to stop at the registration office.
Nurse Expertise and Experience
Every labor and delivery nurse at GSH Family Birthing Center is Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified. All staff, including nurses, are Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certified. Nurses are also trained by our Lactation Specialists to teach new mothers how to breastfeed.
Level II Special Care Nursery
If your newborn needs a little extra care after birth, the experienced and qualifed nursing staff and physicians at GSH Family Birthing Center are able to provide extra care.
Registration
Every mother-to-be may register and submit a birth plan for GSH Family Birthing Center through the hospital admissions office before delivering her baby. If the patient has not registered when she is admitted for labor, staff will guide her through the admission process.
Initial Evaluation Upon Arrival
Each patient is evaluated in the OB triage area. The triage nurse makes each mother as comfortable as possible during this exam. For privacy, only one visitor is allowed in triage at any given time. Expectant mothers who have broken water or feel the urge to push are immediately taken to a labor and delivery room.
Visitation Policy
Family-centered care is fundamental to GSH Family Birthing Center’s core values. Our flexible visiting hours ensure you have the privacy and safety you desire, as well as ample time to visit with friends and family visiting the baby. Your support person may stay and sleep in the room before, during and after delivery. A comfortable pullout couch or sleep chair is provided in each room. During labor, you may have up to four visitors, including the support person. Your children may attend the labor and birth, but other children under the age of 15 will not be allowed in the labor and delivery suite.
After the birth, we welcome family and friends until 8:30 p.m. Visiting children must be well and current with their immunizations. All visitors should be free of cold and/or infectious diseases.
Waiting Areas
There are two spacious, comfortable waiting areas for family and friends while you are in labor. They are located just outside GSH Family Birthing Center. There are snack and soda vending machines nearby for when the cafeteria is closed.
Keeping Your Baby Safe
The center is equipped with an advanced hospital lockdown and alarm system to keep your baby safe and secure.
