Lester Flohr “Gets Moving Again!”

During an annual exam at Samaritan Diabetes Center, Lester Flohr of Dayton learned he had pre-diabetes. For a number of years, he successfully controlled his condition with diet and exercise. But when he gained 30 pounds and his waist size grew to a 46, Lester’s doctor decided it was time for him to start taking medication for his diabetes.

Lester became aware of a GSH program that provides diabetes education and exercise in a group setting. He joined the “Get Moving Again!” Diabetes Exercise Program led by Katie Wysong, a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator. The 10-week course was held in the rehabilitation area at Good Samaritan North Health Center.

“I lost 20 pounds during the program,” says Lester. “I learned about proper nutrition and how to count carbs. The group setting was a great support system. One of the best benefits was that the program helped solidify the habit of exercise in my life.”

Lester found the program so valuable he participated in it twice. “After the program, my wife and I started exercising together. Her support has been critical to my success.”

As a firefighter and chief of the fire department, Lester deals with high stress, poor sleep, and adrenaline rushes. Today, his exercise routine includes biking to and from work every day, as well as working out on elliptical machines and treadmills.

In total, Lester has lost 60 pounds and now has a size 40 waist. His wife has dropped a couple of dress sizes, too. “I hope Samaritan Diabetes Center reaches a lot of people,” says Lester. “The program really helps people reach their weight loss goal. The support and educational information in the “Get Moving Again!” program makes all the difference.”
