Robotic-Assisted Procedures

Until recently, for patients who have just been diagnosed with a condition requiring surgery, options included traditional surgery with a large open incision or laparoscopy, which uses small incisions but is often limited to simple procedures. At Good Sam, we are currently using advanced robotic surgery as a minimally invasive alternative for traditional and more complex surgical procedures in the following areas in addition to general surgery:


Gall Bladder
Single Port Access (SPA) surgery, is a form of advanced, minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery that uses a specialized technique where only  one small incision is used.  Through this single incision the surgeon is able to retract organs and detach and remove the gallbladder. The incision site is typically at the umbilicus - belly button.


At Good Samaritan Hospital, robotic-assisted surgery is used to treat a wide range of gynecologic conditions. 

Hysterectomy is a common surgery used to treat gynecologic conditions such as heavy bleeding, fibroids, endometriosis and pelvic prolapse (slippage of organs). One in three women in the U.S. will have a hysterectomy before she turns 60. Today, many women avoid the large incision and long recovery that come with traditional open surgery by choosing a minimally invasive procedure instead. The da Vinci® system’s enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control enable surgeons to perform a minimally invasive hysterectomy even for complex conditions.

With the da Vinci® surgical system, surgeons can remove uterine fibroids through small incisions with ultimate precision and control. Compared with traditional open abdominal surgery, a da Vinci® myomectomy is more likely to preserve the opportunity for future pregnancy, is significantly less painful, and results in fewer complications, less scarring and less blood loss.  

Pelvic organ slippage (prolapse) may result as connective tissues in the pelvic area weaken with age, after childbirth, and with weight gain and strenuous physical labor. Women with this condition typically have problems with urinary incontinence, vaginal ulceration, sexual dysfunction and/or bowel movements.  Sacrocolpopexy is a surgical procedure in which synthetic mesh is used to hold the vagina in its correct anatomical position. Traditionally, sacrocolpopexy was performed as open surgery through a 5-to-6-inch incision made across the lower abdomen. In da Vinci® sacrocolpopexy, however, the procedure is minimally invasive, using only three dime-sized incisions.

Thoracic Surgery

Robotic assisted thoracic surgery is a procedure that involves surgery on the organs located within the thorax, or chest. This minimally invasive surgery also called thraoscopy or thoracoscopic surgery is performed with a thoracoscope, a thin telescope like instrument with a camera on the end that allows the surgeon to view inside the chest.  With this type of surgery, small incisions are made in the chest or abdomen.  The throracascope and special surgical instruments are inserted through these incisions.  Other names for this surgery include pleuroscopty or VATS (video-assisted thoracic surgery).  Because of this minimally invasive advanced technology we can avoid procedures like sternotomy and thoracotomy, which requires a large incision, and often a longer recovery period.


At Good Samaritan Hospital, robotic-assisted surgery is also used as an effective alternative for complex and delicate urologic operations, including prostatectomy. This procedure, used to treat prostate cancer that is confined to one area, involves removal of the prostate gland and some of the surrounding tissue. By using the da Vinci®, the surgeon has a better tool to spare surrounding nerves, which may enhance patients’ recovery process and clinical outcomes.
