Childbirth Classes

Below is a list of the Childbirth Classes offered by the Family Birthing Center at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Prepared Childbirth

This traditional birth preparation class helps women and their partners learn what to expect during labor and birth. You will learn and practice comfort techniques and breathing methods. We will also review the use of medications, anesthesia, cesarean birth, and how to adjust to life as a new family. A childbirth preparation manual and a tour of The Family Birthing Center are included with this class.

Schedule: Four classes, one class per week 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Comfort Strategies for Labor

This class will focus on relaxation and coping techniques for labor. The use of touch/massage, water for labor and birth, breathing techniques, positioning, and meditation and guided imagery will be explored. This is a great class for first time parents (along with Prepared Childbirth), those having given birth before, or those taking the Birth Day Essentials class. There is not a tour of the birthing center with this class.

On-Line Childbirth Class

Are you too busy to attend a class at a scheduled time? Do you want to be able to review basic information at you convenience as often as you’d like? Would you like to practice the relaxation techniques in the comfort and privacy of your own home? With this new approach to Childbirth Education you can have it all! When you register, you will receive a childbirth manual and a unique PIN number to access the companion website with video clips, printable information and web links to additional information. This may be taken along with another birthing class at the hospital, if desired.

Birth Day Essentials

This class offers parents-to-be the essentials of what to expect during labor and birth. You’ll review the signs of and progression of labor, comfort and coping strategies, and options for your labor and birth. A childbirth preparation
manual is included.

Schedule: One Class 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Refresher Childbirth

Learn what’s new in The Family Birthing Center as you brush up on relaxation and breathing techniques. Couples who have previously given birth will attend the Comfort Strategies class and fine tune their birth plan.

Infant Care Class

This class covers the basics of newborn care including: bathing, skin, nail and cord care, diapering and dressing your newborn, feeding, SIDS prevention, and safety at home and away.  We also will review what to do if you think your newborn is sick.

Infant CPR

Learn CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) skills for newborn and infants up to one year of age. Basics for helping a choking baby are also taught. Class size is limited, register early.

A Successful Start to Breastfeeding

The basics of breastfeeding such as positioning, latching on and nipple care and breast milk supply are covered in this dynamic class. It is taught by a Registered Nurse who is an IBCLC breastfeeding specialist. You’ll learn about how you can prepare for your successful breastfeeding experience as well as about some of the health benefits to you and your baby! Your support person(s) are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Back to Work and Breastfeeding

Going back to work or school? This class, taught by an IBCLC breastfeeding specialist, offers advice for choosing and using a breast pump, breast milk storage, communication with your employer and babysitters, your infant nursing schedule and more. Babies are welcome!

The Family Birthing Center Tour

This informative tour is for families making decisions about their birthing experience. Adults only, please. Tours offered twice monthly.

Children at Delivery

This class is recommended for siblings aged 7 and up who will attend the birth of their new brother or sister. What to expect during labor and birth will be discussed. The parents, child, and a support person for the child should attend this class. Discussing your birth plan with your midwife or physician before attending this class is a must.
