Joe Theismann – legendary NFL quarterback and NFL network sportscaster – and former University of Dayton football coach Mike Kelly provided an evening of stories and great memories on March 12, 2011. Since his shocking injury and subsequent retirement from football in 1985, Theismann has stayed busy both as a broadcaster and a spokesperson for a little known condition called AAA or abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Cardiovascular-Thoracic (CVT) Critical Care Course
Cardiovascular-Thoracic (CVT) Critical Care Course took place on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at the Dayton Marriott
This Regional Cardiovascular-Thoracic (CVT) Critical Care Course presented the latest information in the unique specialty of CVT critical care. With the rapid evolution in the practice and technology of CVT critical care, the Course presented the latest concepts, practices, and technology to the multi-disciplinary professionals providing care for patients undergoing CVT operations and procedures.
This unique course was directed to the entire team of professionals that provide CVT critical care:
- Surgeons, Cardiologists, Interventionalists
- Intensivists & Anesthesiologists
- Critical Care Nurses / Nurse Practitioners
- Physician Assistants
- Cath Lab Technicians
- Perfusionists
- Pharmacists
- Respiratory Therapists
- Administrators
Experts and world authorities presented the latest concepts, technology, management protocols, and clinical experience in their specialties. The program included faculty presentations, audience-panel discussions, and a hemodynamic simulation workshop. Approaches and specific protocols were related to clinical data so that participants could structure their clinical practice on evidence-based medicine.
With the field of CVT critical care rapidly changing, it is anticipated that participation in the course will lead to implementation of new concepts, protocols, and technology. The overall goal is to make the recovery of patients from CVT surgery and interventional procedures faster, safer, and more comfortable.
- The educational objectives of the 2nd Annual Dayton Cardiovascular-Thoracic (CVT) Critical Care Course 2010:
Understand present day challenges in CVT critical care.
- Integrate the latest pharmacologic approaches to management of right heart failure and pulmonary hypertension.
- Understand the principles and uses of the latest modes of mechanical ventilation.
- Understand the Emergency Room approach to acute MI and acute aortic dissection.
- Apply the latest concepts and pharmacology to achieve optimal sedation.
- Understand current techniques used in interventional cardiology.
- Apply the latest concepts in communications to achieve optimal coordination of care in the CVT Critical Care Unit.
- Understand how to integrate into practice technology and techniques for ventricular assist and extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
- Assess the latest concepts and developments in hemodynamic monitoring and management of hemodynamic issues in the CVT intensive care unit

Aaron Boone - a Hall McCoy Heart-to-Heart
On Saturday, January 30, 2010 MLB Hall of Fame baseball journalist, Hal McCoy, and major league third baseman, Aaron Boone, gathered for an evening of great stories and memories from their two legendary careers.
Former Cincinnati Reds player Boone had open heart surgery in May of 2009 and returned to Major League Baseball a mere five months later.
Recently retired McCoy developed health problems of his own that almost cost him his career six years ago, were it not for the insistence of Boone that he not give up on the job that he loved.
These two baseball greats have forged a deep and unique bond between writer and player.
