Elsie Marie Beachler: Commitment to Caring
Elsie began her relationship with GSH in the 1940s. She took her first job in the medical records department and soon began taking dictation for operating room surgeons. After five years of working at GSH, Elsie married Donald W. Beachler and transitioned from an employee to a volunteer.
News that the Hospital planned to start a nursing university motivated Elise to partner with the Foundation in the plan. Founders established the Beachler Nursing University to provide educational resources and continual learning for Good Sam employees pursuing nursing careers. The University fosters personal and professional development of nursing staff and helps recruit top-notch nurses to GSH.
The facility includes two human simulators, which are high-tech replicas of the human body. These simulators help train students and practitioners at all levels for real-life situations.
“One simulator is named Kacy, after my niece who wants to be a nurse,” said Mrs. Beachler. “The other simulator is named Phyllis, after my sister who overcame many healthcare challenges and learned to walk again.”
The Foundation presented Elsie with the Nightingale Lamp Award at its donor reception on May 15, 2009 to honor her commitment to excellence at GSH and the role the Hospital plays in the professional development of nurses in our community.
