A Timeline of "Firsts"
For 50 years, Good Samaritan Hospital (GSH) has been a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. The following are milestones in the history of the hospital’s Cardiology program that included many “firsts” in the region.
*1957 - Cardio pulmonary research lab was established and began research
1958 - GSH performed Dayton’s first cardiac catheterization
1959 - GSH performed the first open heart surgery in Dayton
*1964 - GSH opened first ICU
1966 - GSH opened Dayton’s first Coronary Care Unit, one of Ohio’s first
1966 - GSH developed specialized training course for nurses, approved by the American College of Cardiology: Comprehensive Training for the Coronary Care Nurse
1968 - GSH implemented their cardiac catheterization Service
1970 - GSH opened first monitored step-down unit in the state of Ohio
1973 - GSH performed first intra-aortic balloon pump procedure
1974 - GSH performed first valve procedure
1981 - GSH performed first angioplasty for heart patient
1988 - GSH Cardiology Division introduced the Automatic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (AICD) to treat sudden cardiac arrest
1997 - GSH began Dayton’s only cardiac patient advocate program
1999 - GSH listed Among Top Hospitals in US for Cardiac Bypass Surgery by HCIA
1999 - Dayton Heart Hospital opens
2003 - GSH rated Best in Dayton Area for Overall Vascular Services
2003 - GSH named a 2003 Solucient 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success Winner
2004 - GSH ranked #1 in Ohio and among the top 5% nationally for overall vascular services by HealthGrades, a national healthcare reporting agency
2005 - GSH named a 2005 100 Top Cardiovascular Hospital by Solucient Center for Healthcare Improvement
2006 - GSH was the first in Dayton to perform FDA approved carotid artery stenting
2006 - GSH rated best in Dayton area for Overall Vascular Surgery and Orthopedic Services by HealthGrades
2006 - GSH opened Chronic Heart failure clinic
2006 - GSH first in the Dayton area to use Aquadex, ultrafiltration for congestive heart failure patients
2007 - Dayton Heart Hospital named #1 in Ohio for Cardiology by HealthGrades
2007 - GSH first hospital in the nation to be awarded Joint Commission Disease Certification for coronary artery bypass graft
2008 - Dayton Heart Hospital becomes Dayton Heart & Vascular Hospital, owned and operated by Good Samaritan Hospital
2009 - September 1 – Dayton Heart & Vascular Hospital at Good Samaritan opens; the largest heart program in the region and one of the most highly regarded heart programs in the nation
