Good Samaritan Hospital is among the top five percent in the nation for emergency medicine according to HealthGrades, the leading provider of information to help consumers make an informed decision about a physician or hospital.
The findings are based on an analysis of more than seven million Medicare patient records from 2008 to 2010. HealthGrades Emergency Medicine in American Hospitals report focused on 12 of the most common and life-threatening medical emergencies among that patient population, including heart attack, stroke, pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD.
American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) Certification
2012 - The Good Samaritan Hospital Cardiovascular/Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program received certification by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). Good Sam’s Cardiac Rehab and Pulmonary Rehab were recognized for its commitment to improving the quality of life by enhancing standards of care. Good Samaritan Hospital has maintained this accreditation for the last twelve years.
The AACVPR Program Certification is the only peer-reviewed accreditation process designed to review individual programs for adherence to standards and guidelines developed and published by the AACVPR and other professional societies. Each program is reviewed by the AACVPR National Certification Committee and certification is awarded by the AACVPR Board of Directors.
Certified AACVPR programs are recognized as leaders in the field of cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation because they offer the most advanced practices available. AACVPR Program Certification is valid for three years.
Cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation programs are designed to help people with cardiovascular problems (e.g. heart attacks, coronary artery bypass graft surgery, etc.) and pulmonary problems (e.g. chronic obstructive pulmonary disease – COPD, respiratory symptoms, etc.) recover faster and improve their quality of life. Both programs include exercise, education, counseling and support for patients and their families.
Robotic Gynecologic Epicenter
GSH has been named a robotic benign gynecologic epicenter by Intuitive Surgical, Inc., the makers of the daVinci® Si Surgical System. One of only 25 benign epicenters in the United States and one of two in the state of Ohio, GSH is now the destination for doctors across the country to receive robotic surgery training. Dr. Bruce Bernie, Medical Director for Robotic Surgery at GSH provides his experience in managing the GSH Robotic Gynecologic Epicenter by training visiting physicians and surgeons.
Epicenter sites are chosen for their excellence in patient outcomes, their passion for teaching, and their ability to convey to others the value for their patients. Intuitive Surgical recognized the experience of GSH surgeons and valued the hospital's size and commitment to have better technologies, better outcomes and safety for patients in their decision to designate GSH as an epicenter location.
New daVinci® robotic surgeons and their teams visit an epicenter site to observe cases and learn surgical techniques. Epicenter surgeons then become mentors and/or proctors for those new surgeons in their learning journey. Even after surgeons have successfully completed their initial case series, these mentor-trainee relationships endure through discussions at scientific conferences and advanced training.

National study Ranks Good Samaritan Hospital’s Quality Top Five Percent in Nation
Good Samaritan Hospital, has been named a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™ for the 4th consecutive year by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization. This prestigious distinction places Good Samaritan Hospital among the Top 5% of hospitals nationwide for clinical performance.
HealthGrades Hospital Quality and Clinical Excellence study objectively identifies those hospitals with the best overall clinical performance across all 26 medical diagnoses and procedures that the organization rates. These 268 top-performing hospitals represent only 5% of the nation’s hospitals and each is designated as a HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™.
Unlike other hospital quality studies, HealthGrades evaluates hospitals solely on clinical outcomes: risk-adjusted mortality and inhospital complications. HealthGrades’ analysis is based on approximately 40 million Medicare discharges for the years 2007, 2008 and 2009. Using these top-performing hospitals as a benchmark in this year’s HealthGrades study, HealthGrades quantifies the impact of differences in hospital quality in terms of lives lost and unexpected complications.
The HealthGrades study found that:
- Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence (Top 5% in the nation) such as Good Samaritan Hospital outperformed all other hospitals across all of the 17 mortality cohorts and six of nine complication cohorts studied from 2007 through 2009.
- Specifically, Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence had a 29.82% lower risk-adjusted mortality rate and a 1.91% lower risk-adjusted inhospital complication rate among Medicare beneficiaries compared to all other hospitals.

National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers Grants Samaritan North Breast Center Full Accreditation
The Samaritan Breast Cancer Program, which includes the Samaritan Breast Center and the breast cancer program of the Samaritan Cancer Center, has received a three year re-accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPB).
The National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) is a consortium of national, professional organizations dedicated to the improvement of the quality of care and the monitoring of outcomes for patients with diseases of the breast. The NAPBC strategically built its leadership by inviting leaders from the major disciplines that routinely work together to diagnose and treat breast disease to become part of the consortium. Working toward one goal, this multidisciplinary group formed the NAPBC Board that mutually defined 28 program standards and 17 program components of care that collectively provide the most efficient and contemporary care available for patients diagnosed with diseases of the breast.
The accreditation survey covers mammography, biopsies and pathology, multi-disciplinary conferences, patient navigation. Accreditation by the NAPBC is granted only to those centers that are voluntarily committed to providing the best possible care to patients with diseases of the breast. Each breast center must undergo a rigorous evaluation and review of its performance and compliance with NAPBC Standards. To maintain accreditation, centers must monitor compliance with NAPBC Standards to ensure quality care, and undergo an on-site review every three years.
The Samaritan Breast Cancer program is the only Dayton area NAPBC accredited center, and one of 18 in Ohio.
